This gives you outstanding responsiveness and performance where it is going to be most noticeable in daily usage. Optane 900p SSDs perform extremely well for random reads at low queue depths. Traditional NAND-based SSDs excel at very high queue depths that are not usually encountered outside of synthetic benchmarks (especially for random read performance). One thing to keep in mind is that CrystalDiskMark is not the best synthetic benchmark to use to show off the strengths of the Optane 900p.
I also have a couple of 1TB Samsung 960 PRO M.2 NVMe cards in this machine, so I thought I would run a couple of quick CrystalDiskMark tests on the two drives. My plan is to clone that drive to the Intel Optane 900p. Initially, I installed Windows 10 Professional, Version 1709 on a pretty lackluster OEM 256GB Toshiba M.2 NVMe drive that I had lying around. I am planning on using one of the brand new 480GB Intel Optane SSD 900p PCIe cards as my boot drive. Random write speeds are usually half of random read speeds.I have been building a new desktop workstation based on an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X processor (which I will be describing in much more detail in a subsequent blog post). Typical read speeds (MegaBytes per Second): Diskmark uses thousands of 8 KB files to test this performance - this is the lowest performance you should expect from your disk. These speeds are what you would expect when working with complex programs that deal with a lot of files. Sequential write speeds on flash devices are usually much slower. This is the best performance you should expect from your disk. These speeds are what you would expect when copying/moving large files. Newer technologies such as UASP are coming out often that squeeze out every last ounce of performance out of your external storage devices. The single most important thing you should do is ensure you are using USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 devices. Your external hard disks and flash drives might have multiple factors affecting their performance which should be monitored closely.
Using DiskMark you can see if the performance deteriorates due to age or due to bloatware on your system. Most newer MacBooks and iMacs come with solid state hard drives which are incredibly fast atleast when running normally. Why should I benchmark the performance of my disks?
